As for what “ring my bell” actually means, it’s never stated, but it probably doesn’t involve any actual bells. The synth hit may or may not be an attempt at a bell sound per the record’s title. You probably hear it hundreds of times during the course of this fine record and it never gets old. (Wikipedia describes it as a “sine wave that pitch-bends down.”) The sound was still relatively new at this point, and “ Ring My Bell” was one of the first big hits to use it consistently. It’s a synth percussion hit (likely from a Syndrum) with a descending tone, kind of like a gun-shooting sound effect you’d hear in videogames in years to come. This 1979 record’s appeal comes down to one tiny little sound, the first one you hear. Disco Lab #6: Anita Ward – ‘Ring My Bell’ (1979)
